PDAs for Art Education

Ways to Use PDAs in Your Art Classroom

As a way to check for understanding, ask the students three questions about the lesson and have them beam their answers to the teacher.

Secondary students, either individually or in groups, use PiCoMap to create a concept map of a theme, subject, style, or artist. Using the jigsaw method, they share their work by beaming to each other. Printing is possible by beaming directly to an infrared-capable printer.

Students can use PiCoMap to create a concept map of elements and principles and beam to teacher for assessment of learning.

When introducing a new unit, students use PiCoMap to brainstorm ideas. PDAs facilitate sharing of ideas by students beaming directly to each other.

Students use the PDA module camera to take pictures of their own artwork, and then upload the image to their electronic portfolio. They may also use Go’n Tell to create a portfolio with notes about their work.

Use Sketchy to draw preliminary studies for a future work using traditional art media. Create a short animation demonstrating an idea or to write and share ideas.

When high school students are working in small groups doing Internet research on a topic, teachers and students can use FlingIt to download and share materials for offline use. They can also create their own reference library.

Students create text documents on the PDAs for a research assignment. The document is then beamed for peer editing.

The word processing application on the PDA can be used by students for note taking and journaling about the art making process.

When students are having a class critique of artwork, they can write critical comments and beam them to the student who created the work. PDAs enable comments to be shared in a personal and private way.

Teachers create a game for students, or have them create their own art game with art vocabulary and art history using Bubble Blaster. Teachers use HandySheets to create worksheets, quizzes and surveys for students. They have a permanent record of students’ work.
