PDAs for Family & Consumer Science
Ways to Use PDAs in Your Family & Consumer Science Classroom
Subject: Personal Development
Age/grade level: Middle and High School students
PDA use (incl URL): Use the PalmReader application (downloadable from www.peanutpress.com) to download texts from (www.memoware.com) such as a summary of the principles from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" or a summary of the book "Team Think."

Have students make annotations during their reading.  Annotations are saved as a memo when they “export annotations.” Students can beam their annotations to the teacher, who is able to check students’ comprehension of and reflection on the information being read.

Statement about added value: Using handheld computing devices elevates an ordinary task (reading, understanding and reflecting) with a special uniqueness that engages students and provides an opportunity for 1) additional manipulation of the content, 2) collaboration to learn the use of interesting new technologies, and 3) ancillary problem-solving and learning.

Subject: Self Understanding
Age/grade level: Middle and High School students
PDA use (incl URL):

Use a word processing application such as FreeWrite (downloadable from http://www.handheld.hice-dev.org/ ) to have students journal about a time when they needed to make a compromise between doing what they wanted, weighed against what they should do and what was in the best interest others involved.  Students can beam their example to a partner for peer review on their compromise, and beam to the teacher for final review.

Statement about added value: Using handheld computing devices elevates an ordinary task (thinking, interpreting and journal writing) with a special uniqueness that engages students and provides an opportunity for 1) peer review and feedback, 2) additional manipulation of the content, and 3) collaboration to learn the use of interesting new technologies.

Subject: Understanding STD’s
Age/grade level: Middle School students
PDA use (incl URL):

Using Cooties communicable disease simulation (downloadable from http://www.handheld.hice-dev.org/), teachers can adjust initial carriers, immunity and incubation time to simulate the transfer of sexually transmitted diseases.  The software allows students to be able to view a list of all “meetings” or disease transmissions between handhelds.

Statement about added value: Using handheld computing devices provides concrete evidence of an abstract concept for students.  Digital technology engages and interests students at a higher level while providing an opportunity for additional manipulation of the content and peer collaboration.

Subject: Time Management
Age/grade level: Middle and High School students
PDA use (incl URL): Use the built in date book/calendar application to have students record their own daily activities and those of a professional person for one day.  Ask students to use a word processing feature such as FreeWrite (downloadable from http://www.handheld.hice-dev.org/ ) to make comparisons between the two daily calendars and identify changes that the student would need to make in their own daily routines in order to accomplish everyday tasks of an adult -- such as hold a job, raise children, manage a household, pursue personal interests, etc.
Statement about added value: Using handheld computing devices elevates an ordinary task (recording daily schedule) from a student assignment to an adult-like time management task using adult, business tools.  It engages students as well as teaches adult schedule-keeping along with usage of a common tool for professional calendaring.
